Having lived in the tropics all her life, my friend is having a hard time moving to the cold. She recently migrated to Europe to be with her boyfriend and she told me that she is quite depressed by the weather – she longs for days by the beach draped in sarongs and sporting her Ray Ban sunglasses. I think she’s having a winter blues. It might take her a while to adjust but that doesn’t mean she can’t enjoy the process. This gives me a writing idea! I’m sure she’s not the only one who’s having this problem, which is why I hope this particular post can also be useful to others. Here’s what I would do if I’ve ever moved to a cold country.
- Exercise
Exercise gives you more energy, thanks to the endorphin released. I find myself feeling good and refreshed throughout the day when I exercise in the morning. You don’t have to go to the gym if you don’t feel like it, here are some types of exercise I do at home: core exercise, kettle bell swing, yoga, weightlifting, squatting, jumping jacks! Don’t forget to do proper stretching, too : ) - Good Reads and Good Watch
Occupy yourself with good books or good movies. Whenever I feel like to cave myself in, I always get myself comfortable with a nice cup of hot chocolate/tea and read my books or watch movies. For the winter blues, you might want to read something light – like chick flicks and watch something funny. Romantic comedies always work for me. - Tune into Great Music
Music always gives me good mood. Whenever I feel slow in the morning, I always turn on my music loud and it makes me hum and wants to dance. Therefore, I’m wide awake and ready to welcome the new day. - Hot Bubble Bath
There’s nothing more relaxing and comforting than a nice long bubble bath. Lit some scented candles around the tub and soak yourself in. Take your time and enjoy the warmth. At time like this, a little bit of self-pampering is always recommendable. - Hanging Out With Girlfriends
Call up your friends and have them over, or the other way around. When you feel sad and depressed, that’s when you need your girlfriends the most. You can do a lot of indoor activities together, such as watching movies, playing games, baking, gossiping or even a little beauty session! - Redecorate
I always find redecorating my living space a fun thing to do because I feel like I’m living in a new environment once it’s done. Of course, this may take a lot of effort and energy but the outcome is usually worth it. - Learn New Recipes
Christmas is coming soon and it’s a perfect time to master your cooking skills. Find new recipes online and practice it at home, who knows you might be the next cooking mama. - Adopt a Pet
December is a good month to do good deeds, why not give our furry friends a warm home? Visit your closest shelter and bring them home. Whether you’re a cat or dog person, this is absolutely a noble thing to do. But if your apartment is too small or it’s impossible to adopt one, spending time at an animal shelter gives you new perspective. It always gives me warm and cozy feeling.
